On a brutally hot day in July, we visited Thirsk to take in 2 attractions: the famous James Herriott Museum, and the sculpture garden at Thirsk Hall.
Those of us who visited the Museum in the morning were surprised and delighted to be greeted by “James Herriott’s” (real name Alf White, of course) son Jim White. He took the party around the museum and added enormously to the occasion by his tales of many of the events in his father’s books, and even of how his father had arrived at his pen name.
After lunch, we visited the sculpture garden created by the owners of Thirsk Hall. Unfortunately, the long period of dry weather had left the garden in a badly-parched state, and the day’s heat made it unpleasant for many of us to spend too long out of the shade. It was obvious, however, that it could be a delightful place in more normal weather, with some fascinating artwork on display.
