Patti led us around Ripon Cathedral churchyard, where Tina pointed out one of the 18th century stones with a humorous inscription to a fisherman, then down along the river, and across to the canal. It was becoming a hot day so we were pleased with the shade the trees provided. Cars splashed through the ford, and although the Skell was low, we decided to cross by the bridge!
We followed back along the canal and round to the cathedral again, then to a coffee shop with a garden, and ‘the best scones in Ripon’ – which were indeed excellent. Then to the Spa Gardens, admiring the shapes of the trees, where we finished our ‘wander’. We had the opportunity to chat to everyone and look up at the buildings, windows and rooflines – something we couldn’t do normally, when driving through the city. Thank you, Patti.
I ended my morning at the Cathedral, admiring the third part of the “Threads through the Bible” panels. These 44 large appliqué/embroidery panels took Jacqui Parkinson 10 years to complete and contain more than 25 million stitches.
This section, called “Threads through the Cross” depicts scenes from the life of Christ. I have seen the other sections “Threads through Creation” and “Threads through Revelation” when I have visited Ripon on earlier occasions.
