Over 60 members and friends arrived at St Wilfrid’s church hall on a lovely summery evening for this event. Kevin and June Hawkins were our quiz masters and gave us an interesting, alternative format starting with naming ( or trying to name) 10 National Trust properties in Yorkshire and 10 World Heritage sites in England. Our team fell short on both! It was so obvious when we heard the answers!
After struggling with “Chemical Elements” and “Popular Culture”, we managed the Picture round but then ended with a most enjoyable “fun” round trying to work out which, from a list of events, had made Olympic Sports – and there were many surprises including Town Planning (1928 & 1948 Olympics) Live pigeon shooting ( 1900 Paris Olympics) and Drawings and Water colours ( 1928 -36 Olympics).
Although there were only 19 points between all the teams at the end, the first place was a draw between Tables 1 and 9 and resolved with a demon question of “How many off shore islands are there in Sweden?” Table 9 got the closest, but no-one guessed that there were, as Kevin said, over 220,000 (actually over 267,000) and so Table 9 were declared the winners: Adrienne Gerrish, Jill and Patrick Davey (who were also part of (last year’s winning team), Sheila and David Henthorne, Valerie Williams and Margaret Bridge.
Many Congratulations!
In fact, most people were “winners” as the raffle table had been groaning under the weight of all the prizes. Helen thanked all those who had donated the prizes and thanked Margaret Bridge for running the raffle. Geoff thanked us all for coming and especially Polli who had supplied us with teas and coffees, and we all applauded and thanked Kevin and June for a most enjoyable evening.
