18th July 2024 – Birstwith Hall Gardens

A wonderfully hot afternoon, after weeks of rain, found us in these well hidden gardens and, although Lady Ackroyd was recovering from surgery, the guided visit went ahead with the help of the housekeeper, with the estate manager partly taking on the role of guide. Thirty of us explored green vistas, flower borders, an orchard and rose garden, coping with unexpected uneven steep steps and were rewarded with a sight of Red Kites over the orchard, then a cup of tea and light refreshments.

The original house, covered in Virginia Creeper, dated from 1700’s and had been added to over time. What wonderful views of the fields and mature trees on the estate, from the terrace!

Thank you to Helen for arranging.
